Georgian Dual Citizenship

In order to apply for a dual citizenship the following documents must be presented at the Consulate General of Georgia in San Francisco

  1. An application form addressed to the Georgian President (It is important to note that all questions on the application must be fully answered);

  2. Copy of a birth certificate (if the applicant was born in Georgia). If an applicant was born abroad, a birth certificate translated into a Georgian langauge (certified by a notary office) and certified by an apostille;

  3. Copy of a Georgian passport (if applicable);

  4. Copy of a foreign passport;

  5. In case of change of name or surname, translated copy of a foreign passport (certified by a notary office within the country of residence);

  6. If an applicant’s name or surname has legally changed, a copy of the marriage certificate or document on the basis of which the name  or surname was changed must be submitted, translated, and apostilled by a relevant U.S. institution. If a marriage certificate does not show name or surname change, the appropriate agencies must provide proof of name or surname change. The document of proof must be translated into Georgian and apostilled;

  7. If a change of name or surname has taken place in an applicant’s foreign passport, a certified copy by the notary office of the receiving country is mandatory;

  8. 2 passport size photos;

  9. Georgian oath of citizenship;

  10. Two recommendation letters. The recommenders must be Georgian citizens and they must present proof of Georgia citizenship by providing copies of valid passports or identity cards;

  11. If the applicant is a minor, parental consent is mandatory. A letter of consent may be completed at the Consulate General if parents of the minor are able to appear in person. If parents are not able to visit the Consulate General in person, they may have the letter of consent completed and apostilled by a local notary office;

  12. The Consulate General must receive a letter from the applicant stating a request for dual citizenship. The Consulate General will aid the applicant with the dual citizenship process.

After the SSDA database uploads the applicant’s documents, each applicant will receive a registration number and code. The Consulate General will notify the applicant once a registration number and code are generated and released. Once the case number and code are presented to the applicant, the applicant must pay a fee of 250₾ (Georgian Lari) to the House of Justice.

The documents mentioned above can be delivered in person or mailed to the Consulate General (Address: 930 Montgomery Street, Unit 301, San Francisco, CA 94133).

Please take into consideration the following information:

  1. The application form for dual citizenship and attached documents must be submitted in Georgian. Documents submitted in a foreign language must be notarized or accompanied by a certified Georgian translation.

  2. Documents issued in a foreign state must be submitted in a hard copy format. All foreign documents presented at the Consulate General must be apostilled unless otherwise requested by a Georgian international treaty or agreement. 

 

Establish Georgian citizenship

What is a Citizenship?

Citizenship is a legal connection between an individual and a state; this connection provides social, economic and political rights such as personal freedom, freedom of desired life, freedom of education, freedom to participate in elections, freedom to receive a minimum income. The citizenship also imposes certain obligations on an individual, such as obeying the state laws and etc.

When do I need to establish my citizenship?

  1. If a person born before March 31, 1975, resided in Georgia for a minimum of 5 years, remained within the Georgian borders until March 31, 1993 and has not received a citizenship of another state;
  2. If a person born after March 31 1975, resided in Georgia until March 31, 1993 and has not received a citizenship of another state;
  3. If a person born within the Georgian territory has left Georgia after December 21, 1991 and does not fall under requirements of subsections “a” and “b” and has not received a citizenship of another state;

Required documents for establishing the citizenship

In accordance with the subsection (a) a person needs to visit the Consulate General of Georgia and provide the following documents:

  • Filled out Application;
  • Proof of residence in Georgia until March 31, 1993 (passport, military ticket, a copy of work book and/or any other legal document supporting the claim);
  • Proof of residence in Georgia for at least 5 years (passport, military ticket, a copy of work book and/or any other legal document supporting the claim);
  • 2 passport-size photos (3x4cm, printed)
  • A person wishing to establish the citizenship has to be accompanied by an adult citizen of Georgia, in order to confirm photo-identity of the applicant. The accompanying person needs to have a valid Georgian passport or an identification card;
  • Copy of a Green Card.

In accordance with the subsection (b) a person needs to visit the Consulate General of Georgia and provide the following documents:

  • Filled out Application;
  • A document confirming applicants date of birth (birth certificate, Georgian identification card, passport, passport of parents);
  • Proof of residence in Georgia until March 31, 1993 (copies of legal documents supporting applicant’s claim);
  • 2 passport-size photos (3x4cm, printed);
  • A person wishing to establish the citizenship has to be accompanied by an adult citizen of Georgia, in order to confirm photo-identity of the applicant. The accompanying person needs to have a valid Georgian passport or an identification card;
  • Copy of a Green Card.

In accordance with the subsection (c) a person needs to visit the Consulate General of Georgia and provide the following documents:

  • Filled out Application;
  • A document confirming applicant’s date of birth (birth certificate, Georgian identification card, passport, passport of parents);
  • Documents supporting applicant’s claim of leaving Georgian territories after December 21, 1991. Copies of Passport, military ticket, work book, and/or any other legal documents supporting the claim;
  • 2 passport-size photos (3x4cm, printed);
  • A person wishing to establish the citizenship has to be accompanied by an adult citizen of Georgia, in order to confirm photo-identity of the applicant. The accompanying person needs to have a valid Georgian passport or an identification card;
  • Copy of a Green Card.

 

Terminate Georgian citizenship

In case you wish to receive a citizenship of another state, it is important for you to begin the process of terminating the citizenship of Georgia

Required documents:

  • Filled out Application form;
  • Proof of Georgian citizenship (Copy of passport or identification card);
  • If you are between the ages of 18 and 27 – Copy of a military ticket, or the military service postponement document, or a document of dismissal from the necessary military services;
  • 2 passport-size photos (3x4cm, printed);
  • If you are terminating the citizenship of a minor – please provide a copy of birth certificate and a confirmation letter from the legal guardian;
  • If you have changed your first or last name – please provide a copy of document confirming the change of name/last name;
  • A document confirming that you are in the process of receiving another state’s citizenship.

Payment for the services is required after a citizen receives a registration number for the application
